Responsibilities:-
  • The senior resident increases his/her knowledge base and develops skills for higher acuity patient care. 
  • He/she assumes a greater supervisory role in patient management in the Emergency Room, Clinic, and Ambulatory Surgery Unit and on the in-patient service. 
  • The resident should be able to recognize, manage and make decisions on patients who need hospitalization and surgical intervention during consultations either in the Emergency Department or on other services.
  • The senior resident shall have an appropriately written note on-line or in the chart of all patients admitted or seen in consultation which include an accurate history, physical examination and a detailed management plan.
  • The senior resident assists and supervises the junior resident.
  • The senior resident may act as a chief resident on some assigned services.
  • The senior resident will attend all clinics, conferences, ward rounds, and assist the chief resident in decision making when on-call.
  • The senior resident shall be aware of the names and locations of attendings on-call for the various services at all times.
  • The senior resident may communicate with the attending directly to discuss management of the patient when it is not convenient for the chief resident to do so.
  • The senior resident will present all cases during sign out with the attending if the chief resident is not available. 
  • Senior residents may perform minor and major operative procedures under the supervision of an attending surgeon. The senior resident must make sure a pre-operative note and a brief operative note are written on all procedures.
  • The senior resident will record all operative procedures performed in the computerized program provided by the Residency Review Committee.
