As an Engineering manager at BT within the Digital Integration platform of Architecture division, you will be instrumental in shaping the future of our API platform. Your leadership will guide multiple teams, influence budget and technical decisions, and improve operational efficiencies. In this role, you will create next generation of API Platform for BT and you will lead and grow various aspects of API Platform and provide leadership to advance our API product strategy so that our partner developers, internal developers, and business decision-makers can innovate and ship products for our customers faster.
What you’ll be doing
Key Responsibilities:
• Team Leadership: Lead and mentor a team of engineers responsible for building and managing the organization’s API platform on Apigee.
• API Platform Development: Drive the design, development, and implementation of scalable and secure APIs using Apigee, ensuring alignment with organizational goals and standards.
• Cross-Functional Collaboration: Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including product management, infrastructure, security, and business stakeholders, to define API requirements and deliver solutions that meet business needs.
• Technical Strategy: Develop and execute a technical roadmap for the API platform, identifying opportunities for innovation, optimization, and enhancement.
• Performance Optimization: Continuously monitor and optimize the performance, reliability, and scalability of the API platform, leveraging best practices and performance tuning techniques.
• Team Management: Recruit, onboard, and retain top engineering talent; foster a culture of collaboration, innovation, and continuous learning within the team.
• Vendor Management: Manage relationships with external vendors, including Apigee support and other third-party service providers, to ensure the effective operation of the API platform.
The skills you’ll need
Skills:
• Leadership: Proven experience leading and managing engineering teams, with a focus on fostering collaboration, accountability, and professional growth.
• API Platform Expertise: Strong understanding of API design principles, RESTful architectures, and experience with API management platforms, preferably Apigee.
• Software Engineering: Proficiency in programming languages such as Java, Python, or JavaScript, along with experience with relevant frameworks and tools for API development.
• Cross-Functional Collaboration: Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively collaborate with diverse stakeholders to gather requirements and drive consensus.
• Technical Strategy: Strategic thinker with the ability to translate business requirements into technical solutions and develop long-term technical roadmaps for the API platform.
• Problem-Solving: Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a focus on identifying root causes and implementing effective solutions to complex technical challenges.
• Agile Methodologies: Experience working in an Agile development environment, with proficiency in Agile methodologies such as Scrum or Kanban.
Good to Have:
• Apigee Certification: Certification in Apigee or other relevant API management platforms.
• Cloud Experience: Familiarity with cloud technologies and platforms, such as Google Cloud Platform (GCP) or AWS, and experience with deploying and managing applications in cloud environments.
• DevOps Practices: Knowledge of DevOps practices and tools for continuous integration, deployment, and monitoring, such as Jenkins, Docker, Kubernetes, or Prometheus.
• Security Expertise: Understanding of API security best practices, including authentication, authorization, encryption, and threat protection.
• Enterprise Integration: Experience with enterprise integration patterns and technologies, such as messaging systems (e.g., Kafka, RabbitMQ) and ESBs (Enterprise Service Buses).
